We live in NE Ohio & are looking into buying a home. We had a contractor give us estimate for the electrical work. He gave us the following: for New 100 Amp Box,wire, breakers, outlets, ect. he gave us an est of $4750. Does this seem accurate to you? Just want to make sure we aren’t getting ripped off. Thanks!

Are you getting new wiring ran and brand new outlets installed through out the house? It also depends on the number of outlets and there location.

what is the price on the Whole House Surge Protector

    • Glen

      December 2, 2012

Depends on the quality of the surge protector. $150 – $1,000 for basic units. Is there room in your electric panel for a 220 volt breakers? guessing $500 to $700 labor and material for an average install.

I am have a microwave installed above my stove. I have the hard wiring but not the oulet. What would the cost be for an outlet installation in the cupboard above the microwave?

Anne, Microwave over stove require their own separate 15 or 20 amp circuit. Is your current hard wiring the old exhaust fan wiring? If it’s the existing hood fan wiring you’ll need new wire and a separate circuit breaker installed.

If there is a existing dedicated microwave circuit already in that location then I would guess $200 area to relocate and install the electric outlet in cupboard

Hi, I was wanting to know what the estimated cost of the following would be:

    1. Extra outlet in the garage below the breaker panel

    2. Extra outlet and light in the attic

    3. Extra outlet in room adjacent to attic

    4. Two motion lights installed in back of house (I already have the lights)

I had a 10′ hood installed, the ductwork exits building 12 feet from hood, has exhaust and return air fans and needs to be hooked up in conjunction with ansul system (already installed awaiting puff test) to shut down all power when triggered.
What is approx cost or range of cost for hook-up?
    Thank you.

People…. I know everyone would like to know how much it would cost to etc…because they don’t want to get roped off.. I don’t either, but I’ve had outlets I stalled that costed $100 and others that costed $500+. It all depends on the job. Unless the electrician sees the job in person there is no way to give a price. There are so many factors that come in play. No point in wasting your time asking online. People ask me how much for a service in stallin my house just so I have an Idea… I say anywhere between 2000 and 18,000….

Whats the cost of replacing your home because it burned down due to “I learned in 1 day from a book how to do electrical wiring?.. ans. Perhaps your life, or your childrens, Insurance payoff for reconstruction, Renting till new construction is done. Loss of all momentos, clothing, records etc. All the ripoff questions bring this to light: An certified electrician had 5 yrs of proper training, maintains a state issued license that cost money each year, is required by the state to have continued education each year, has and maintains insurance that costs serious money.Guarantees his work for a year. Those are but a few of the things Elect. Contractors do and have. Next time complaints are voiced; think about the results of having next door neighbor who learned in 1 day from a book how to do it and then the man that has commited his life to being a professional electrician and stands by his warranties, and wishes to protect his reputation. So what if he makes a decent living; afterall he busts his butt daily to do so and goes where no one else dares.. e.g. 125 degree attics to cool your house.. trash, water, rodent infested crawl spaces to wire or repair your electrical and its only 18 inches high there!… In summary; which is more cost effective? You or your childrens lives, loss of your home and the inconveinance for 8 months during new construction Or Paying a professional electrican to do the work right the first time and warranted for a year on top of that?

Tom and Dan are both correct regarding electric prices online. There are to many variables to each job. It’s like me asking how much does a pair shoes or dinner cost. Depends on want type, brand, size or quality of the shoe or food I’m looking for.

I am thinking about purchasing an older home. It has open grounds in the outlets of 4 rooms. I am thinking of having the owner either fix these before I buy the house or take money off the house so I can fix them. Are these a fire or other safety hazard? Do you know how much this would cost to get fixed approximately? Thanks

I Also will second the motion of Dan, Only because in the state of Florida in the year of 2011 the Fire safety Administration put out a statistic of over 20 thousand fires Caused by bad electrical wiring, the wires were not installed properly or maybe they paid an unlicensed Electrician who maybe never even looked at the Nec to know what is allocated for these times. Or Maybe he or she could have been a cheapskate and put the whole load on one wire!!who knows when you run into an unprofessional , They are money hungry and do not have a passion to complete the job right nor do they care if when you cut the light on once he leaves it causes a small house fire!!you get what you pay for America!!If he is a licensed technician himself or a reputable company, they will do the job right. Whatever they are asking for should be paid, If not I think you should maybe right your own losses.

We have a wall microwave. One night it malfunctioned and would not turn off. The fire department came and ended up cutting the power line that services both the microwave and our regular oven. Sears, who services our appliances, told us we would have to call an electrician to fix it, before they can repair whatever problem the microwave was originally having. Can you please tell me how much this type of electrical repair will typically cost? We live in Durham, North Carolina. Thanks.
